Summer is finally here, and there’s never been a better time to get out onto the course and enjoy the sunshine!
We’re looking forward to a busy time for the club over the summer. Good luck to all the competitors from each section who will be competing in their section’s Club Championships over the next few weeks. It’s always a prestigious competition, fought for intensely and with highly anticipated results. We look forward to seeing who comes out on top!
Our social evenings continue to be a success with The Soul Man going down an absolute storm at the start of June, so much so that we have booked him again for November! If you haven’t been to a tribute night give it a go, they are great fun!
The rest of the club continues to be busy with the stunning weather we’ve been experiencing lately, and it’s so nice to see people enjoying themselves around the club with whatever they are doing. It feels so good to be back to some kind of normality.
Try your luck in our new golf photo competition by sending us your favourite golf photo taken at the club this summer! We’ve got some fantastic BMW PGA weekend tickets up for grabs. Find out more below.
I look forward to continuing to see you all making the most of the club and the weather!
Over the past couple of months, the golfer in me has been praising the weather but the greenkeeper in me has not. With a lot of sun and little rain we were under pressure to keep the course looking the best it could. Fortunately, over the last couple of weeks we have been graced with a few showers which did the course the world of good.
As well as the occasional rain dance, the greenkeeping team have been busy preparing the course coming out of a rather difficult spring. Warm days but chilly nights meant the soil temperature remained low, causing the different grasses on the greens to grow at different rates.
We all experienced the ‘slow & bobbly’ greens… and now you know the cause. Since then, the greens have been verti-cut twice, which helps to remove lateral growth and Poa Annua (Annual Meadow Grass) seedheads as well as aiding in green speed. Combine this with regular fertilising and you have the greens we are playing on today. As well as the greens, all the fairways have had an application of fertiliser and an ongoing project of weed killing is also in place.
Most of the work we do during these months is mow, mow & mow, but we have also completed our bunker programme on the par 3 Lannocks. The majority of this included edging the bunkers giving them a nice crisp edge, but also remodelling the 9th bunker completely. The overflow car park leading into the greenkeepers’ compound has been cleared, levelled and re-surfaced with road planings.
On a more recent note, the ditch that runs between the 15th tee and 14th green has had more rocks added to it. This is to deter the use of trolleys being pushed through this area. Please can I remind everyone that there are bridges across the ditch in that area and using the ditch as a crossing causes wear and will look very untidy. Please do not create or follow any new paths through the ditch in this area.
Upcoming work on the course over the next few weeks will include a light application of top dressing to the greens on both courses, to fill the holes where rooks have been pecking for leatherjackets. All par 3 tees will be seeded and dressed as well as the 1st and 10th tees. We are yet to re-route the path from the 18th green, which will join up with the concrete path adjacent to the putting green. All of this will take place alongside the daily mowing programmes that are carried out.

The second club night of the season was another resounding success. 56 players were on good form as we celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a friendly 9-hole Stableford singles competition.
There were many versions of the red, white and blue gear out on our course. It was great to see people having a good time out there, and the weather was kind to us for the most part.
People enjoyed a good mixture of food and drink as the scores were counted up. The results were as follows.
- 1st - Jeet Kandola - 24 points
- 2nd - Stephen Swanson - 23 points
- 3rd - Ryan Gore - 22 points (Back 3 countback)
- NTPs - Jeet Kandola and James Ferrari
- Best dressed male - Ray Black
- Best dressed femaie - Sara Gill
Congratulations to Jeet on a great win with those 24 points.
The next Club Night will be on Wednesday 13th July, and will be a pairs competition. The theme will be around the 150th Open at St Andrews in July. The dress code is either old fashioned wear (plus fours, flat caps etc) or tartan. Maybe both!

It’s competition time! We want to see your favourite memories on the course, at a golf event or enjoying a post-game lunch with friends. To enter, add your photo to the Facebook competition post as a comment with the hashtag #GolfLife or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Are you wanting to look and feel more confident on your upcoming summer holiday? Then make sure you sign up for our 28-day Feel-Good Summer Challenge! This will be promoted around the club or speak to a member of the Wellness team for more information. Maybe book some PT sessions too to help you achieve your best results!
You will have noticed we have slightly reduced our summer timetable as classes are generally quieter during this time. We will of course look to increase this after the summer, so if you have any recommendations as to what classes you would like to see back on the timetable, then please let our Wellness Team know.
We nominate a Health Club 'Member of the Month' and our recent winner was Mark Robertson! Mark had set himself a goal to lose a stone in eight weeks, and with his consistency in training and help from our PT Phil, he managed to hit his goal in just six weeks. Well done, Mark! Could this be you for the month of June?
